Growing Fruits

Each of the different groups of fruit, whilst all doing well on a loamy clay soil, in an open aspect have their own individual preferences.

Most fruit trees require an acid to neutral moist loam or clay soil. And as an example their differences in ideals are shown below.

Over the next few months we will cover some of the individual needs of each of these types of fruit

  • Apples - the ideal is a moist loam – wet ground tends to lead to more canker attack.
  • Pears – Pears can cope with a heavier soil than apple loam than apples.
  • Plums and peaches– Plums prefer a deep moist well drained soil rich in nitrogen.
  • Cherries – need a good loam.
