Growing Fruits
Growing fruit at School is easy – just choose an easy to grow local varieties and wait for the harvest of learning experiences and fruit!
We can bring an outdoor classoom to your school that’s a habitat full of trees, blossom, fruit and discovery year after year – the once common local habitat of an orchard.
An Orchard?
Imagine a woodland-like habitat that’s full of wildlife but also engages children in growing their own food, whilst maths, languages and science are all around in the orchard…. discovery awaits.
At our school?
A habitat that shows the coming and passing of seasons like no other, right on your doorstep. Its produce includes not only fruit for the school but also an astounding variety of curriculum links. What better outdoor classroom?
Growing fruit is easy! There is no great mystery to it and once the right local varieties are planted it's just a case of waiting and harvesting your fruit.
The programmes.
Apple Watchers –(KS1). Through games and stories the children discover the parts of the apple tree and their roles, what the tree needs to grow and how to care for it, before planting their tree and then thinkng how it will change during the seasons.
Orchard Watchers Level 1
Training as an Orchard watcher involves unerstanding the apple tree, its role as part of the habitat and, in turn, humans as part of the habitat. This habitat is part of the wider environment- what does bringing fruit from Italy and America do to the environment? – is there anything we can do?
The Orchard Watchers programme can continue developing, amongst others, curriculum linked horticultural and environmental skills at Levels 2 & 3.
Planting a School Orchard is an exciting and easy way for children to experience and discover the origins of their food and so much more – give us a ring on 01352 740022 for details.
