Plant Fruit Trees
Planting a tree is an enjoyable and special activity.
Follow the steps below and you will give your Welsh fruit tree the best possible start. Time and care invested now will bear fruit in time to come!
First choose a site that has plenty of sun - any good moist garden soil will do. Next choose a dry day when the soil is not soaking wet – better for you and the tree!
Your tree may either be bare rooted – with no soil on its roots, or container grown and come in a pot – just follow the guidelines below for which ever type you have.
Pot grown trees
- If your tree is container grown, give it a really good water an hour or two before you plant it.
- Dig the tree a hole 15 cm or so larger than the tree’s pot and break up the soil in the bottom of the pit.
- It may be tempting, but don’t add manure or fertiliser to the soil you will put back in – the tree's roots will never leave the hole and the tree will never be strong or stable. We will feed it in future years.
- Take the pot off the root ball and gently tease out a few of the larger roots.
- Place the tree in the hole so that the tree's soil level is the same as the soil around it.
- Start filling the hole around the roots, gently firming as you go.
- Water your tree in well and then apply a mulch around the tree to keep the weeds down.
- Optional – send or email us details of the variety of tree you have planted to help us track where NE Wales’ rare varieties are.
You now have the next generation of NE Wales fruit in your garden, all it needs for its first year is watering during dry spells.

Bare root trees
- Keep the tree's roots moist as soon as they arrive home - if necessary dig a trench in the garden and heap soil over the roots.
- On a frost free day when the soil is not soaking wet, dig a hole large enough to take all the tree’s roots without them having to be bent round when put in.
- Take the tree from its trench or plastic bag and place in the hole, spreading the roots out. Hold the tree so that the ring of soil around its stem is level with the soil it is being planted in.
- Trowel in soil, gently shaking the tree so the soil settles between its roots. Firm occasionally and add more soil until the tree is planted at the same level as in the nursery.
- Water your tree in well and then apply a mulch around the tree to keep the weeds down.
