The Initiative
The initiative was set up to save our disappearing fruit varieties unique to North East Wales, the North East Wales Orchard Initiative (NEWOI) is working to restore local fruit growing and all its benefits throughout Wrexham, Denbighshire and Flintshire.
With 90% of orchards in the area already lost, there is a real possibility that with the loss of these orchards local varieties, unique to an area, valley, or even farm would also disappear forever – a bleak picture for the future. However, with the funding and support of this initiative's partners, there is a growing resurgence in fruit growing in North East Wales, helping to paint a much brighter picture.
This picture includes the continuing discovery of varieties and knowledge, the planting of new orchards and the production of local fruit and fruit trees. There are now a number of ‘Orchard Safe Sites’, where the old varieties have been found, these are being used to establish and propagate new, historically and culturally accurate orchards in local areas.
NEWOI has set up the ‘North East Wales Fruit Growers Group’, for those producing local fruit or fruit trees in the area. It runs regular workshops and training – if you are interested in participating in and contributing to the group, please visit the get involved page.
